FLOOD - Color Puzzle
NEWAbout FLOOD - Color Puzzle
FLOOD is a colour puzzle with a deceptively small rule set. You control the top-left square, you choose a colour, and your entire connected region changes to it, absorbing any adjacent squares of that colour. Fill the board within a move limit. That is the whole game, and it is a genuinely interesting optimisation problem. The intuitive strategy is to pick whichever colour gains the most squares immediately, and it is wrong often enough to matter. Greedy play grows your region in whatever direction happens to be adjacent, which frequently means expanding into a pocket while the far corner stays isolated. Good play instead grows toward the parts of the board that are hardest to reach, accepting a smaller immediate gain for better shape. Because the move limit is tight, this is a puzzle rather than a sandbox. There is usually a solution with two or three moves to spare and several near-solutions that fall one short, which is exactly the margin that makes a level worth replaying. Boards get larger and add colours as you progress, and the increase in colours matters more than the increase in size, since each additional colour makes greedy play worse.

Tips & Strategy
- Do not simply take the biggest immediate gain. Greedy play expands into easy pockets and strands the far corner.
- Grow toward the hardest-to-reach region first. Awkward areas only get harder as the move count drops.
- Look for colours that appear in large connected clumps rather than scattered singles.
- If you are one move short repeatedly, the mistake is usually in the first three moves, not the last.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Why does the biggest gain not always win?
- Because it grows your region in whatever direction happens to be adjacent. That often expands into an easy pocket while an isolated corner gets further out of reach.
- Is every level solvable?
- Yes, boards are generated to be completable within the move limit, usually with a small margin. Falling one move short means there was a better opening.
- What makes later levels harder?
- Additional colours more than board size. Each extra colour reduces the average gain per move and makes greedy play noticeably worse.
